• Stuck or sluggish VVT oil control valve
• Gummed-up variable valve timing phaser
• Low or dirty engine oil restricting phaser oil flow
• Timing chain stretch or a slipped chain

What to do next

1. Check oil level, condition, and pressure
2. Watch commanded vs actual camshaft position with a scan tool
3. Verify oil flow to the VVT system and clean the control valve
4. Inspect the timing chain and phaser for wear
5. Replace the phaser or chain if the system does not respond to commands
