Check these first

• A gear shift position sensor A out of range
• A sensor A connector with poor contact
• A wiring fault in the gear shift position circuit
• A TCM or ECM misreading the shift signal

What to do next

1. Read gear shift position A on a scan tool
2. Move the shifter through its range and watch the signal
3. Check the sensor A connector and wiring
4. Compare the reading against the shifter position
5. Replace the sensor if the signal is off
6. Clear the code and retest
